Results of the 2009 Bowlers Draw

The Draw for the Cash Prizes and the Club Prizes took place on Friday 26th February 2010 at the Bowls England Men's Dinner at the Walker Stadium, Leicester.Full details of all winners can be found at: http://www.bowlsengland.com/index.asp?PageID=192The top three prizes were drawn by Bowls England Women's President Diane Ingle and the subsequent prizes by Kath Lloyd (Friend's Treasurer) and Mike Poole (Friend's Membership Secretary). The winner of the first (of 35) Cash Prizes was Gloucester Civil Service BC, winning £2,500. Club Prizes were awarded to the eight Clubs selling the most tickets, whilst all clubs selling £100-plus were entered in a separate Club Draw. The top selling Club, with sales of £930, was Horley BC from Surrey.Final OutcomeAlthough ticket sales were down 22% on 2008 - due mainly to the economic environment - total sales of £39,215 generated a 'net gain' of £26,011. Of this sum, more than £19,000 was donated to the selling clubs and almost £7,000 made available to the Friends of English Bowling, to be utilised in support of Bowls England and bowls developments within England.ThanksOn behalf of the Friends, I would like to thank everyone involved in making this Draw such a wonderful success, whether helping to run the Draw, organising Club sales and especially those who bought tickets. The fact that this Draw raises money from within bowls, and that so much of it is retained and utilised within the bowls community, makes this Draw such a special and worthy event. With kindest regards and sincere thanks for everyone's help, co-operation and support.Graham ClarkLicensed PromoterBowlers Draw Society

Bowls England to introduce Tony Allcock Trophy as first unified seniors' competition

Bowls England has announced plans to introduce a new over 60 club mixed double rink competition in 2011, to be known as the Tony Allcock Trophy.Seniors bowls events are growing in popularity in other parts of the UK and Bowls England, recognising the age demographic of its membership, expects the new competition to meet demand from the majority of its Members and also reflects the move towards a unified sport. Each side will consist of two men and two women in each rink, with matches played over 18 ends rather than the traditional 21. It is planned that the National Championships at Worthing will be extended by one day to enable the final stages to be held at Beach House Park on the final weekend.Tony Allcock MBE, Bowls England Chief Executive, said: "I am delighted to donate the Trophy for this new competition with its slightly shorter format. Many clubs now find their members, especially those in the upper age bracket, want to play more mixed events, so we have introduced this new competition to meet demand at club level. I am sure clubs across the country will be battling it out to become the first winners of the Tony Allcock Trophy."All players shall be aged 60 years or over on April 1st in the year of the competition.Entry forms will be available towards the end of the 2010 season together with all other Bowls England National Competitions. The entry fee will be £25 per side, with no limit on the number of entries per club.

Men's Bowler of the Year 2009

Derbyshire's Simon Skelton was named Cyclo-ssage/Taylor Bowls Bowler of Year during the Bowls England Men's Annual Dinner held at the Walkers Stadium, Leicester, on Friday 26th February. The 37-year-old from Stute BC was rewarded for his achievement in winning the 2009 Bowls England Men's National Singles Championship - just 12 months after being defeated in the final. He picked up the award ahead of several other strong candidates including Suffolk's John Rednall, winner of the Champion of Champions, and Leicestershire's Andy Irons who skipped his Blaby rink to the National Fours Championship.Skelton's recognition marked a memorable double for Derbyshire after Jean Baker (Blackwell BC) scooped the equivalent women's award just three months earlier.David Rhys Jones, who presented the award of behalf of the bowls press, said: "We felt that following the disappointment of defeat in the 2008 final, Simon hit back emphatically. In the final last year he looked destined to be the bridesmaid again when Steve Tuohy led 20-16, but the last few ends, full of tension, saw him score five shots without reply to win 21-20."Tony Allcock MBE, Bowls England Chief Executive, added: "Simon is not just a terrific singles player, but widely regarded as a great team player too. I am delighted that he has received this award as further recognition of his achievements."Skelton received the handsome Rose Bowl, a Magnum of Moet & Chandon Champagne and a special present from Taylor Bowls.ENDS
