In an inspiring tale, Brian Taylor of County Arts BC in Norfolk, along with his partners Clive Derry and Mick Brown, has qualified for the Aviva National Finals in the Men’s Triples. This remarkable achievement comes exactly 50 years after Brian first qualified for the National Finals in 1974.
Brian’s first appearance at the National Finals was in 1974 when he, along with Frank Hart and Peter Paul, also from County Arts BC, clinched the title of County Triples champions.
Their success saw them progress to the final of the National Men’s Triples, where they unfortunately fell short of winning the title. They lost 19-16 against John Barratt, Ralph Shakespeare and Ronald Gildert of English Electric BC, Warwickshire.
The memory of that near-miss lingers, but now, half a century later, Brian has another shot at glory. Could history repeat itself in 2024, or will Brian go one step further to victory?
Since his first appearance in the National Finals, Brian has become a serial qualifier. His career is decorated with numerous accolades and is evidenced by his impressive record of 11 individual county titles.
Brian’s contribution to the sport extends beyond individual achievements. He played an astounding 190 matches in the Middleton Cup, contributing to his team winning the competition on four occasions. His Middleton Cup journey began in 1969 and continued until 2012, culminating in a victorious final match as Norfolk lifted the coveted title against Wiltshire. Overall, Brian has represented Norfolk in 293 competitive matches, a testament to his dedication and skill.
In addition to his on-field success, Brian has excelled in other roles. He served as the Norfolk Middleton Cup Manager from 2006 to 2018, overseeing 61 matches and securing two victories during his tenure. Brian was also Men’s County President in 2015.
His latest qualification for the Aviva National Finals not only celebrates his talent but also marks a significant milestone in his storied career. As he prepares to compete once again on the national stage, his family and friends will be hoping to see Brian achieve victory, 50 years on from his first attempt. Make sure you come along and cheer him on!
