Charlie Beeton bags British Isles spot

15th May, 2023

Charlie Beeton (Felixstowe and Suffolk BC) wrapped up an action-packed weekend in style after winning our Under 18’s Singles tournament at Oxford City and County BC, Oxfordshire.

The Suffolk rising star secured the title with a 2-0 win on sets against Samuel Brugnoli (Buckden BC, Huntingdonshire). Both finalists emerged from a talented field of youngsters to get there.

After three wins from three in Saturday’s qualifying stages, Beeton headed into the knockout stages in good stead. He sealed 2-0 wins against Tegan Grewal (Kingscroft BC, Leicestershire) in the semi-final and George Clarke (Southey BC, Surrey) in the quarter final. In total, Beeton impressively only dropped two sets in his eight matches over the weekend.

The triumph for Beeton means he goes forward to represent England at next month’s British Isles Championships in the Men’s Under 18 Singles. The event takes place on 28th and 29th June in Ayr, Scotland.

Huntingdonshire’s Brugnoli had a resilient run to the final. In the semi-final, he overcame Berkshire’s Ryan Lali (Abingdon BC) and Lucas Powell (Congresbury BC, Somerset) in the quarter final with 1.5-0.5 wins in both matches.

In the Plate Competition, it was an all-Gloucestershire final as Finley Williamson took on Cheltenham BC club mate Joshua Hodges. It was Williamson who claimed the win with a 2-0 victory.

Despite not being able to qualify for the Main Event, both Cheltenham BC players found their form in Sunday’s knockout stages.

Plate winner Williamson beat Alfie Holland (Avon BC, Wiltshire) 2-1 in the semi-final and Lily Ashby (Broadway BC, Worcestershire) 2-0 in the quarter final.

Runner-up in the Plate, Hodges won 2-1 against Harry Wimble-Roberts (Faversham Rec BC, Kent) in the semi-final and 2-0 against Vinnie Minter (Worthing Pavilion BC, Sussex) in the quarter final.

Bowls England would like to express thank to Oxford City & County BC for hosting the event and all players, markers and umpires for their assistance in making the event a tremendous success.
