The bowls community has shown remarkable generosity to support Rhys Lee, who suffered a severe stroke in December last year. A well-known figure in the sport, Rhys served as secretary at his club Bletchley Town BC and achieved national acclaim by winning the National Men’s Pairs title in 2012 alongside Luke Nunn when he was at Barton-le-Clay BC in Bedfordshire. The stroke left Rhys with no movement on his right side and without the ability to speak. However, thanks to intensive therapy and a strong network of support, Rhys has made significant strides in his recovery, recently managing small steps and even regaining some speech – a heart-warming development considering the challenges he faced 11 months ago.
Central to this journey has been the extraordinary efforts of Dean and Donna Brookes, Ian Hodges, and the members of Bletchley Town BC in Buckinghamshire. Determined to make a difference, they organized a fundraising day in May that brought together bowlers from across the country to show their support for Rhys.
The fundraising event was held at Bletchley Town BC, Rhys’ home club. Bowlers from counties including Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire, Leicestershire, Norfolk, Lancashire, Surrey, and Berkshire gathered to play a match against Bletchley Town.
Throughout the event, there was an outpouring of generosity, with a tombola, cake sale, spiders, and a massive raffle that saw thousands of tickets sold nationwide. The highlight of the day was undoubtedly Rhys’ presence. Just five months after his stroke, Rhys was able to attend the event, witnessing first-hand the overwhelming love and support from the community.
A staggering £11,700 was raised for Rhys and his family as of a result of this incredible day.
The fundraising efforts haven’t stopped there. Bowls clubs across Buckinghamshire have chosen to support Rhys as their ‘charity of the year’, and individual club members have gone above and beyond to raise funds. From participating in Sober October to shaving their heads, their acts of kindness have been inspiring. Even counties beyond Buckinghamshire have raised money during their tours, demonstrating the widespread support for Rhys.
To date, over £15,000 has been raised to assist with Rhys’ future care, adaptations to make his life easier, and support for his young family. Every penny has been a testament to the kindness and generosity of the bowls community and beyond.
