Double Success for England at Four Nations event

1st August, 2021

England’s Performance Squad enjoyed a successful Four Nations event at Victoria Park, Royal Leamington Spa, with both Men’s and Women’s squads topping their respective tables.

Held over four days since Thursday, England were joined by teams from Ireland, Scotland and Wales in preparation for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, which will commence in just under one year.

John McGuinness, Bowls England Performance Director, said: “It’s been a great test for our guys against some top quality opposition from Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

“The standard of bowls throughout the event has been exceptional, and full credit to our squad for relishing the challenge put in front of them and securing some great victories.

“It’s been great to have an event that combined the para and able-bodied disciplines running side-by-side, which has truly showcased the team spirit within the squad. It offered a perfect opportunity to inspire each other and wear the England shirt with pride.

“Finally, I must thank all players and the management teams from Ireland, Scotland and Wales for making the trip to Leamington to join us for this Four Nations event.”

On the final day, England faced Scotland in the only session of the day, sharing the spoils across the four disciplines.

Jamie Walker enjoyed a 21-15 victory over Iain McLean in a singles contest of the highest-standard, with Katherine Rednall, Ellen Falkner MBE and Sian Honnor also securing victory over Scotland’s Lesley Doig, Dee Hoggan and Lauren Baillie-Whyte in the Women’s Triples.

In the Women’s Pairs, Sophie Tolchard and Amy Gowshall led Claire Anderson and Caroline Brown 8-5, before a run of six consecutive ends gave the Scots the upper hand.

Louis Ridout, Ed Morris, Jamie Chestney and Sam Tolchard were also involved in a great battle with Scotland’s Stuart Anderson, Ronnie Duncan, Derek Oliver and Paul Foster MBE, just losing out on the final end.
