The 2024 European Championships proved to be a triumphant event for England, concluding with an impressive medal haul of four Golds and one Bronze medals.
On the final day of the Championships, Joe Dawson clinched Gold in the Men’s Singles, Nicole Rogers and Harriet Stevens won Gold in the Women’s Pairs, and Ruby Hill, Emily Kernick, and Amy Pharaoh earned Bronze in the Women’s Triples.
Joe Dawson demonstrated his skill in the Men’s Singles event, topping his group with four wins out of five to qualify. In a superb Semi-Final performance, Joe beat Czech Republic’s Craig Hurry by 21-1. The Gold medal Final saw Joe face Jersey’s Ross Davis in a closely contested match. After a tense first half, Joe led 11-10 before scoring seven unanswered shots to pull ahead 18-10. Although Ross closed the gap to 18-15, Joe delivered a decisive play on the final end, securing a 21-15 victory. This win added to Joe’s recent success at the Aviva National Finals, where he also won the Men’s Champion of Champions title.
Nicole Rogers and Harriet Stevens excelled in the Women’s Pairs, advancing to the Semi-Finals as group winners. They faced Jersey’s Chloe and Lindsey Greechan, and convincingly saw themselves through to the Final after a 19-6 victory. In the hunt for the Gold medal, the England pair faced Ireland’s Hannah Cochrane and Shauna O’Neill. Nicole and Harriet took an early 10-2 lead after five ends and maintained control throughout the match, ultimately winning 16-9 to claim the Gold.
In the Women’s Triples, Ruby Hill, Emily Kernick, and Amy Pharaoh topped their group and faced Wales’ Sara Marie Nicholls, Jodie McCarthy, and Caroline Taylor in the Semi-Finals. Despite a challenging start, which saw them trailing 17-3, the England trio staged a remarkable comeback to level the score at 17-17. However, Wales managed to secure a narrow 18-17 win on the final end. The trio dusted off the disappointment and headed in to the Bronze medal match revitalised, defeating Ireland’s Rachael Cochrane, Lara Reaney, and Chloe Wilson by 24-12 to secure the Bronze.
England’s Men’s Fours team, consisting of Nick Wardle, Jack Emmerson, Martin Spencer, and Andrew Briden, narrowly missed out on a medal. After an undefeated group stage, they suffered an 18-17 extra-end defeat to Ireland in the Semi-Finals and, despite fighting hard to add to England’s medal tally, were beaten by Israel 13-12 and narrowly missing out on bronze.
As the European Championships concluded, England finished third in the overall team standings for the Andy Meekison Trophy. Ireland placed second, with the host nation Scotland emerging as the overall winners.
