England stars feature in Bowls Premier League 20

21st November, 2024

The 20th edition of the Bowls Premier League (BPL), held in Australia, featured some of England’s finest bowlers as they competed on one of the sport’s most exciting stages. With a fast-paced, thrilling format and two new teams in the mix, the BPL continued its legacy as a highlight on the bowls calendar.

Jamie Walker, fresh from his National Men’s Singles victory, delivered an impressive performance with the Sydney Saints alongside teammates Dawn Hayman and Ben Twist. The Saints finished third in the standings, earning a spot in the Finals series. Their journey culminated in a Semi-Final appearance which was a brilliant debut for Walker in the event.

Katherine Rednall, bronze medallist in the Women’s Singles at the 2023 World Championships, joined forces with Alex Marshall MBE and Ryan Burnett to represent the Moreton Bay Pirates. Despite strong performances, the Pirates finished just outside the finals zone, securing seventh place in the standings. Rednall’s international experience was evident and her contributions added to a competitive campaign.

Nick Brett, who won Gold in the Men’s Triples at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, lined up for the Gold Coast Hawks with Nathan Rice and Kelsey Cottrell. Despite their best efforts, the Hawks struggled to find form, finishing 12th in the standings. However, Brett’s renowned shot-making remained a standout feature, even in a challenging campaign.

The atmosphere was fantastic as the short format keeps the crowd involved all the time and as a player you have so much to think about with every bowl. One good or bad bowl can win or lose a set but it’s something I would recommend to anyone that gets the chance, as I was welcomed by everyone.Nick Brett

The Tweed Ospreys, represented by Corey Wedlock, Chloe Stewart, and Aaron Teys, claimed the BPL 20 title in a thrilling finale. Their consistent performances throughout the competition saw them become champions for a fifth time, defeating the Sydney Lions to secure the title.

The BPL’s unique format, which sees each team play all others twice in a fast-paced, TV-friendly setup, continues to grow in popularity. England’s representatives demonstrated their world-class abilities, competing against some of the best players from around the globe.
