County Profile

Somerset Bowls Association

A meeting took place on 21 March 1914 with representatives from fifteen clubs attending. The outcome was the formation of the Somerset County Bowling Association. A gradual stream of clubs affiliated and by 1936 there were 75 clubs. The County lost virtually a third of its clubs in that year as the EBA ruled that all clubs north of the River Avon should be part of Gloucestershire. However, more and more clubs were being created and by 2010 there were 73 affiliated clubs. In 1928 ladies of the Ashcombe and Clarence Park clubs in Weston Super Mare, together with two others, created the Somerset County Ladies Bowling Association. Steady progress ensued and by 2010, 68 clubs were affiliated. 2010 was a significant year as the totally unified Somerset Bowls Association came into being. There have been some outstanding personalities and players of both sexes over the years. Somerset men provided five EBA Presidents, the last of which was Norman Thomson who also became President of the BIBC and later of the WBB. Dorothy Ellis OBE was President of the IWBB in 1977 and the first lady Chairman of the English Sports Council. Nancie Colling MBE was President of the EWBA in 1976 and Secretary from 1980 to 2002. The men have provided many Internationals, with David Bryant CBE being the most famous. His career spanned 31 years in which time he won 3 World singles championships, 4 Commonwealth Games championships and many other titles. The ladies also have an impressive list of Internationals at both Senior and Junior level. In recent years Edna Bessell MBE and Pip Branfield have been active in managing International teams, and in 2016 Mo Monkton was appoimted Bowls England's Disabled Player and Elite Performance Manager.
