County Profile

Suffolk County Bowling Association became active in 1934 with only four clubs. In 1935 both the Ladies and Men affiliated to the English Bowling Association, as only four clubs were members Suffolk were not allowed to enter the Middleton Cup or John’s Trophy. The first President of the County from the Felixstowe West End Bowls Club being Mr C.J.Squirrell. The Ladies section being founded by Miss Amy Roberts. They men played their first match against the Wiltshire tourists later that year.

In 1936 four more clubs had applied for membership with three more joining later that year, the County were then accepted into the Middleton Cup.

Membership continued to increase and by 1939 the total had reached 16.  

Personalities from Suffolk over the years include Ladies National President Margaret Ashford in 1987 and Cliff Waterman, Men’s President in 2008. The County John’s team were successful in 1965 and 1979 and runners-up in 1971,75,76, 84 & 2013. In 1965, 66 and 92 they won the Double Rink competition. Suffolk have also had Ladies represent England in the International series at various times the first being Amy Roberts in 1935.

The first County Handbook was produced in 1936.

By 1967 the total number of clubs had reached 63. Today the number has decreased to 49!

In 1968 and 1995 the men reached the final of the Middleton Cup, being unsuccessful on both occasions.

In 2004 John Rednall represented England in the World Championships. We also had British Isles Champions in the Triples in 1984, the Under 25s Singles in 1988 and the Pairs in 2004. The first Suffolk player to represent England being Spencer Kerry in 1947 followed by Arthur Haggar in 1957 and others to this day. John Rednall having played more than anyone in the County and continues to represent his Country today. In recent years Suffolk have had Junior Internationals in Abi Manser, Louise Catchpole and Katherine Rednall, the latter progressing to senior level.
