find a County
Wiltshire Bowls Association founded 1914, Wiltshire County Women’s Bowls Association founded 1946, unified to Bowls Wiltshire 1st January 2009.
The Moonrakers is the name by which the bowls world best knows Bowls Wiltshire. The County Badge depicts the legend of the Moonrakers and even the County stickers bear the words ‘The Moonrakers’ rather than the County name. The background story to this can be found on the Bowls Wiltshire website - http://www.bowlswiltshire.co.uk/
The Wiltshire Bowls Association was formed on 6th May 1914 with 14 clubs, each paying half a guinea (52p) to be affiliated. The Wiltshire County Women’s Bowling Association was formed in 1946 with 3 clubs and a total of 50 lady members.
The two Gender Associations joined together on January 1st 2009 and now, in 2014, the Centenary Year, there are 50 Clubs in the unified Bowls Wiltshire.
The County is governed by a Policy & Executive Committee working with a Management Committee including the two gender committees and other appointed Officers alongside one delegate from each affiliated club. There are two Presidents who each preside over all the matches and official events for their respective gender.
In the hundred years of bowling in Wiltshire there have been many National successes for both the Men and the Ladies and the County has provided 3 Presidents of the National body – H. V. Slade OBE in 1955, Gwen Budd in 1984 and, in 2014 Adie Lloyd had the honour of being BE President during the County Centenary Year.
As Bowls Wiltshire moves into the next 100 years we look forward to seeing our young bowlers develop into County and National Champions with guidance and support from our experienced players. This is the future of our County and of the game we all love to play under the name of the Moonrakers.
We look forward to meeting members of many other Counties both on and off the green during the coming seasons.
