Gilly Meadows: The Story Behind Dursley BC’s Unsung Hero

25th October, 2024

Gilly’s journey into bowls began in childhood, when her parents, avid skittles players, decided to try indoor bowls. At just seven years old, Gilly joined them on the green at Gloucester Leisure Centre, using her skittles skills to impress.

In 2001, after relocating to Dursley, she found herself looking for ways to connect with her new community. A local bowls club’s open day reignited her passion for the sport after trying it at just seven years old. “I was hooked and joined right away,” she recalls. Her involvement quickly deepened, fulfilling the role of fixture secretary and gradually expanding to various leadership positions within the club.

Over the years, her dedication to bowls has flourished. She has not only competed in county competitions but also taken on significant responsibilities such as club secretary, coach, safeguarding officer, and fundraiser. Her commitment to Dursley BC’s success is rooted in a desire to see the club thrive within the community, continuously shaping new initiatives for development and inclusivity.

Gilly’s motivation to dedicate so much of her time to the club goes beyond her love for competition. “It’s not just about playing bowls,” she says. “It’s about creating a welcoming environment and encouraging socialisation within the club.” After the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Gilly recognised the importance of mental wellbeing and reducing isolation, leading to her championing social events and trips to strengthen the bonds between members.

Her commitment to inclusivity also shines through. Gilly successfully secured a grant that allowed the club to upgrade its facilities, making it fully accessible to players with disabilities. This achievement enabled individuals to enjoy the sport for the first time, demonstrating her belief that bowls should be accessible to everyone.

At Dursley BC, volunteers are the backbone of the club. As a non-profit CASC (Community Amateur Sports Club), Gilly stresses the importance of teamwork and community spirit. “As the old saying goes, ‘Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much’,” she says. Her favourite events are open days and experiences like Bowls’ Big Weekend, which showcase not only the sport but also the camaraderie and teamwork that define the club.

Gilly highlights that volunteers bring a range of skills, from accounting and DIY to project management and bar work, helping the club run smoothly. This support network enables members to step out of their comfort zones, try new roles, and contribute to the club’s overall success.

In 2023, Gilly’s tireless contributions were recognised when she was nominated for the Bowls England Unsung Hero Award. “It was a complete surprise when the committee announced my nomination at our Christmas lunch,” she shares. A public vote followed, and the club rallied support from the community and beyond through local media and social channels. “I took ten committee members and other friends to the Bowls England Awards and was shocked when my name was announced as the winner! I thank the committee for their kind nomination and support, and to everyone for voting.”

Her win in February left her feeling humbled yet proud to bring the award back to her club and community.

The award has had a lasting impact, raising the club’s profile and attracting new members. “At Bowls’ Big Weekend in May, we had 50 people come through the gates to try bowls. Many mentioned seeing the publicity about the award.” The recognition has not only boosted the club’s visibility but also strengthened its place in the local community.

Dursley BC celebrated its 75th anniversary this year, and Gilly has been instrumental in organising new events to mark the occasion. One standout event was a special match against the Gloucestershire Bowls Association, which drew high praise from attendees and even led to requests for more friendly fixtures in the future.

Gilly’s message to those thinking of getting involved in their local bowls club is simple: “Don’t hesitate – just do it! You won’t regret it.” She encourages newcomers to browse local clubs to find one that aligns with their ethos and interests. “Our club is a vibrant blend of members and volunteers with a rich rural heritage. Whether you enjoy competitions, friendly matches, or the social side, there’s something for everyone.”

Gilly believes that recognising the hard work of club members is crucial to keeping the sport alive and thriving. “Recognition inspires teams, boosts morale, and raises awareness of the sport,” she says. Her message to clubs is to continue supporting one another and nominating individuals for awards. “Keep up the hard work and dedication within your clubs and surprise somebody by putting them forward for an award. You never know, you might just win!”
