Grandad and Grandson duo make it to the Aviva National Finals

7th August, 2023

Making it to the National Finals is the pinnacle for any bowler, but to do it with alongside family makes it that little bit more special. Grandad Eddie Gradon and Grandson Owen Harker have fought hard through each round of the Men’s Pairs within their county area to make it all the way to Leamington for that sought out spot at the Finals, which “feels special and incredibly natural to be playing with other other,” according to Owen.

“We know how each other play and we have respect for each other – he’s the reason I got in to Bowls myself so to be playing alongside him, too, is really precious to me.”

When asked what they are most looking forward to, Owen said “showing people what we are made of and have fun playing with my Grandad in the sport we love most!”. But it’s not just about turning up and playing – the pair have big ambitions. “We want to go all the way and win the Men’s Pairs, and if I can make my Grandad proud along the way, that would be really special,” said Owen.

The pair have been playing together for a while, and share a mutual love for the game. When asked why he loves bowls, Owen had this to say. “I love bowls because of the people within the sport who you make friends with and anyone can play at any level, and no one judges you.”

Come and see Eddie and Owen battle it out at Victoria Park, in the hope for glory in the Men’s Pairs. There is no doubt that this year will provide many unforgettable matches, moments, and celebrations. So don’t miss out on your tickets for the Aviva National Finals!
