Hat-trick of titles for England at Women’s British Isles Championships

England’s representatives secured a hat-trick of titles at the British Isles Women’s Bowls Council Championships this weekend.

The Championships commenced at Les Creux, Jersey, on Friday 14th June, with all finals taking place on Saturday 15th June.

Suzanne Cotton and Diana Jones enjoyed success in the pairs with victories over representatives from Ireland (21-13) in the semi-final and Wales (24-17) in the final.

Sophie Tolchard, Kelly Atkinson, Lorraine Hackett and Natalie Chestney secured the fours title by also defeating Ireland and Wales. A 20-16 defeat of Ireland in the semi-final was followed up by a five-shot win over Wales in the final.

Bowls England President Hazel Marke was part of the Hampshire quartet that claimed the senior fours crown. Lesley Johnson, Brenda Plumpton, Marke and Margaret Holden defeated a Jersey rink by two shots in the semi-final, before enjoying a 10-shot victory over Scotland’s representatives in the final.

Elsewhere there was disappointment for Sharmishta Patel, Maureen Vandrau and Margaret Smith as they were defeated by a single shot in the triples preliminary round to Jersey. Tolchard meanwhile was beaten 21-11 by Scotland’s Laura Welsh in the preliminary round of the singles.
