Junior bowlers set to take centre stage at Oxford

12th May, 2023

This weekend, 64 junior bowlers will travel to Oxford City and County BC, Oxfordshire with the ambition of winning our Under 18’s Open Singles Tournament.

The two-day event across Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th May is the first of our eagerly anticipated junior events of 2023.

2022 National Women’s Two-Bowl Singles champion Rhianna Russell (Hertfordshire) and Finley Williamson (Gloucestershire), who played his part in Cheltenham BC’s 2022 National Men’s Top Club triumph, are amongst the juniors hoping for glory.

Bowls England Performance Director Mo Monkton, Men’s Junior Manager Stuart Thomas and Women’s Junior Manager Nicola Bowe will be in attendance over the course of the weekend. All of them are excited to see the future stars of our game in action.

Play on Saturday will start with the 64 players divided into three groups of a maximum of 24. Each player will play three matches within their group.
At the end of the group stage the competitors in the top half of the group will qualify for the main event, the remaining competitors will be placed into the plate competition on Sunday 14th May.

At the end of the group stage the competitors will be seeded depending on their performance with those in the top 32 qualifying for the main event, those outside the top 32 will still have a chance of glory participating in the consolation Singles plate competition. Both will be played to a conclusion on Sunday 14th May.

The top men’s performer in the main competition will be invited to represent England in this year’s British Isles Men’s Under 18 Singles at Ayr, Scotland, in June. At present there is no British Isles event for Under 18 women.
