Making a Difference: Yaz Hasan’s Mission to Inspire Young Bowlers

19th March, 2025

Bowls is more than just a game – it’s a sport that brings communities together, and young players like Yaz Hasan are proving just how powerful that connection can be.

Yaz, a talented Junior International for England, has been named the first-ever Ambassador for Sport Godalming, a charitable organisation dedicated to supporting and promoting sport in the Surrey-based town and surrounding villages. Her new role will see her encouraging more young people to take up sport, offering mentoring, and helping others find the same passion for bowls that she discovered as an eight-year-old at Godalming & Farncombe BC.

Yaz won the Walker Cup with Surrey at the 2024 Aviva National Finals.

“I’m delighted to be teaming up with Sport Godalming so even more young people can benefit from mentoring and support to follow their dreams of playing sport,” said Yaz. “Their help has proved invaluable as I progressed from complete beginner to the Junior International I am today. I am excited to help others fulfil their potential.”

Yaz’s journey in bowls has taken her across the British Isles, representing England indoors and outdoors. Most recently, she was part of the Women’s Under-25 International Squad that claimed victory in Aberdeen, defeating Wales, Ireland, and Scotland to be crowned champions. She currently plays at Egham IBC and Southey BC, continuing to challenge herself at the highest level.

Simon Crowther, Chairperson of Sport Godalming, believes Yaz will be a fantastic role model: “We’re delighted to be working with Yaz to promote the work of Sport Godalming. She will be a great ambassador due to her focused and determined nature, as well as her unique understanding of what it’s like to be a young athlete striving to be the best.”

Yaz’s story is a brilliant example of how bowlers can make a lasting impact, both on and off the green. Whether it’s mentoring young players, supporting a local club, or using bowls as a way to bring people together, there are many ways to give back to the sport and the community.
