Merton Primary Schools’ Tournament is a hit at West Wimbledon BC

4th July, 2024

On June 18th, at West Wimbledon BC, the ninth annual London Borough of Merton Primary Schools’ Bowls Tournament took place. This year four squads of ten were involved in the tournament, two from Holymount Primary School and two from Holy Trinity C of E Primary School. Ahead of the tournament, each school had attended whole class coaching sessions from local clubs, with 60 children from each school receiving taster sessions. Holymount worked with West Wimbledon BC whilst Holy Trinity worked with Wimbledon Park BC. At the end of the sessions, after consultation with school staff, 10 children were selected to go forward to the double rink, 6-end, round-robin competition. In the competition, 5 points were awarded on each end for the shot bowl, then 4, 3, 2 and 1, for the next closest bowls.

At the end of the tournament, which was supported by the Deputy Mayor of Merton, the Surrey Men’s and Ladies’ Presidents, the Men’s Vice-President, the Merton School Sports Partnership and members of West Wimbledon BC, Wimbledon Park BC, Merton Park BC and Mitcham BC, the children received certificates, medals and gifts from Bowls Surrey.

As to the result… Holy Trinity won the Sports Partnerships ‘Refspect Award‘ for their outstanding sporting behaviour, whilst this year’s tournament champions were Holymount Harriers with a grand total of 303 points, ahead of Holy Trinity ‘H’ on 284, Holy Trinity ‘T’ on 254 and Holymount Heroes on 239.
