BOWLS ENGLAND ANNOUNCES 2018 CELEBRATION MATCH SCHEDULE

Bowls England is delighted to announce its schedule of 25 Celebration Matches for the 2018 season.

President Bill Smith and his team will enjoy four matches against affiliated clubs who will be commemorating their centenary in 2018. The opening match will take place at Cheltenham BC, Gloucestershire on Tuesday 15th May to celebrate 100 years at Suffolk Square following the move from its previous home in Imperial Gardens at the conclusion of World War One.

This will be followed by 100th anniversary celebrations against Ashford BC (Middlesex), Hungerford BC (Berkshire) and Popes Mead BC (Sussex), all of which are being contested as six mixed rinks.

There will also be a quartet of matches against affiliated clubs who were formed in 1893 and are subsequently celebrating 125 years in 2018. These include Alexandra BC (Sussex), Handsworth Wood BC (Warwickshire), Ilfracombe BC (Devon) and Middlesbrough BC (Yorkshire).

Box BC (Wiltshire), Caister BC (Norfolk), RG Carter BC (Norfolk) and The Imps Bowling Association will all reach their 50th anniversary next year and celebrate the occasion with a match against a Bowls England representative side.

In addition to numerical milestones, Bowls England also considers requests for special occasions such as the opening of new greens and clubhouses. Bletchley Town BC (Buckinghamshire) and Bristol St. Andrews BC (Somerset) will both be commemorating the opening of a new clubhouse with a celebration match in June 2018, with Farnborough BC (Hampshire) commemorating the opening of their new green the following month.

Bill Smith will take a side to face his own club, Goodwood BC (Leicestershire) on Friday 25th May, with the club also hosting an annual fixture against the Friends of English Bowling on Tuesday 11th September.

Annual matches will continue to take place against the English Indoor Bowling Association at Belgrave BC (Leicestershire), a six rink men’s fixture against the Welsh Bowling Association at Dinas Powis BC, and two further fixtures against the Friends of English Bowling at Victoria Park, Royal Leamington Spa during the National Championships.

Durham’s Lyndhurst BC will celebrate its success as 2017 Club of the Year winners with a match on Monday 23rd July, with additional matches taking place against Bowls Devon, Cumbria Women’s Bowling Association and Bowls Leicestershire.

If your Club or Association is celebrating a significant milestone or special occasion in 2019, why not celebrate it with a Bowls England Celebration Match?

The closing date for applications for 2019 matches is Friday 23rd February 2018.
