Bowls England is saddened to advise of the passing of Allan Higgins, an Honorary Member of Bowls England and a Life Member of the English Bowls Umpires Association, Bowls Lancashire, and Bolton BC.

Originally from Kingston upon Hull, Allan moved to Lancashire in the early 1980s, where he played a pivotal role in the development of Bolton BC. His commitment was instrumental in the installation of the club’s first pavilion, which was relocated from the army camp at Weeton Barracks.

Allan’s contributions extended far beyond his local club. He played a key role in the preparation and success of the Manchester 2002 Commonwealth Games at Heaton Hall BC, helping to ensure the smooth running of an event that showcased bowls on the world stage.

As well as his administrative and officiating achievements, Allan enjoyed success on the green. He won the Lancashire County Pairs in both 1985 and 1986 alongside Gordon Niven, and the Northern Counties Fours in the same years, with Tom Armstrong as skip in 1985 and David Holt in 1986.

His tireless efforts and unwavering dedication to the sport will be fondly remembered by all who knew him. Our thoughts are with his daughter, Julie, his son, Andrew, and all his family and friends at this difficult time.

Allan’s family would like to share the funeral arrangements for those who wish to attend and pay their respects.

The funeral will take place on Thursday 17th April 2025 with a service at 1:15pm at All Saints Church, Church Street, Clayton-le-Moors, BB5 5HT. This will then be followed by a committal at 2:15pm at Accrington Crematorium, Burnley Road, Accrington, BB5 6HA.
