Rebecca Wigfield, from Desborough BC in Northamptonshire, has enjoyed a remarkable 2024 season. She has proven her prowess by clinching gold at the British Bowls International Series and booked her place at the Aviva National Finals in multiple competitions.
Fresh off her recent successes, Rebecca shares her thoughts on the Series, the pride of wearing the England shirt, and the significance of playing at Leamington.
Reflecting on her recent gold medal win at the British Bowls International Series, Rebecca expresses her excitement about the revamped series format. “I really enjoyed the new format, and it made the series very exciting, right up to the last game. It was great to play in different disciplines, and we showed great team spirit, fighting hard to get our points on the board,” she says.
The opportunity to compete in different disciplines showcased the team’s versatility and spirit. “Winning any medal is always a proud moment, so to get Gold and repeat the success of last year is even more special.”
Unlike this year, where the team competed as a single unit, last year in Ayr saw England in two teams, culminating in a bittersweet gold medal match.
“Having to play against our own in the Gold medal match was bittersweet,” Rebecca admits. Despite this, her personal undefeated streak in the series was a highlight.
Following the series, Rebecca continued her winning streak with a victory against Ireland in the recent Test match, marking a superb international season. The honour of wearing the England shirt is something she holds dear.
“It’s always an amazing feeling stepping out onto the green in an England shirt, playing alongside your teammates in front of friends and family,” she says. Each match is approached with the same determination and passion, making every opportunity on the international stage count.
Adding to her stellar season, Rebecca has qualified in all four major Championships: Singles, Pairs, Triples, and Fours. This remarkable feat mirrors her success from 2015 and means a lot.
“Getting through the county stages to qualify in one competition alone is always a special feeling and something I never take for granted, so knowing I’ve given myself the best shot at winning a National title makes me very proud.” she notes.
Rebecca’s journey doesn’t stop there. She has also qualified for the Walker Cup with the Northamptonshire team. Recalling their last run to the final in 2019, she is determined to go one step further this year. “We’ve had some close, tough matches so far and I don’t expect it to be any different when we’re at the Aviva National Finals,” she says. Teamwork and support have been key to their success in the double rink format.
For Rebecca, playing at Leamington holds a special place in her heart. Her journey began at a young age when her coaches Andy and Leah introduced her and her mum to the atmosphere and excitement of the venue.
“A couple of years later I started playing in the Amy Rose, and following that began qualifying in championship competitions,” Rebecca shares.
“I have so many fond memories of playing at Leamington, and have made lifelong friends along the way,” she reminisces. Each season, her primary goal is to qualify for as many competitions at Leamington as possible.
Describing the atmosphere at Leamington during the Aviva National Finals, Rebecca highlights the vibrant and welcoming environment.
“There is always a fantastic atmosphere around the greens, especially with the introduction of the stand seating,” she says. She encourages everyone, whether seasoned players or newcomers, to experience the excitement of the Finals.
“You’ll witness great talent, enjoy catching up with friends or meeting new people, and you’ll return home setting yourself the goal to qualify for Leamington in the coming years!”
