Winslow BC champion accessibility and inclusivity to boost club membership

8th November, 2024

Winslow BC in Buckinghamshire has seen a fall in its membership in recent years but members have taken a proactive approach to attract new members and have been open and inclusive in their attitude.

As well as improving the look of their surroundings and making the club more visible to people walking past, they have invested in a significant amount of bowls equipment and bowling aids to make it easier for their older members who experience difficulty with mobility, allowing them to continue enjoying bowls. They have also actively encouraged disabled bowlers to try the game and ran successful open days at the start of the season. When approached by a gentlemen in a wheelchair they fundraised and built a permanent ramp to access their green and hand rails to enable those with walking difficulties to walk onto the green.

They raised the funds to provide this and the equipment through grants from local Rotary and Lions groups and accessing a local charity supporting villages in their area. With their open and positive ‘we can’ attitude and the club is now seeing the benefits of their hard work.
