Yaz Hasan of Southey BC, Surrey, has achieved a stunning feat by qualifying in eight competitions at this year’s Aviva National Finals. This remarkable accomplishment is a testament to her dedication, skill, and the unwavering support of her teammates.
“I am just in shock of how this has happened!” Yaz exclaims. “You always hope to get through in a couple, but to get through in eight is just unimaginable!”
Reflecting on the teamwork that has driven her success, Yaz credits her teammates: “I would not have been able to do it without all my teammates. It has been a massive team effort in every single competition, where we have dug deep and pushed through.”
Returning to Victoria Park for the Aviva National Finals is a momentous occasion for Yaz. “I have said previously about the Nationals being the pinnacle of our sport, and it really is. You get to represent your club and county against other talented and strong clubs and counties to get your hands on a trophy,” she shares.
The event is not only about competition but also about togetherness and community. “In the midst of it all, you see old friends and make a lot of new friends too. Every year is unique!”
Qualifying for eight events requires immense dedication. Yaz remains humble about her journey: “I take each round at a time, and the opposition as they come. The outcomes some may assume on paper, are sometimes the complete opposite on the day. We are all human at the end of the day and sometimes games go our way, and other times, they do not.”
Yaz’s victory in the Women’s Fours at the 2023 Aviva National Finals, alongside Jemma Tuohy, Elizabeth Anderson, and Debbie Souter, has shaped her approach to this year’s competitions. “Like Debbie always told us before every round – just enjoy it. It is what we always do, and sometimes it relaxes you, which makes you play better.” Yaz and her team are ready to defend their title, having qualified from their county Surrey.
The lessons from last year’s victory remain central to Yaz’s mindset. “A key lesson is to always dig deep and fight – a comeback is always on the cards!” she emphasizes.
Yaz is eager to represent her county and club at this year’s National Finals. “On the green, I am really looking forward to representing my county – Surrey – and my club – Southey – in the different disciplines, as well as playing against some of the best. Southey has done so well this season, with qualifiers across 18 disciplines, so very excited to cheer on our club-mates!” Off the green, she looks forward to supporting her teammates and reconnecting with old friends.
Yaz’s journey in bowls began in 2011 at a club in her hometown of Godalming. A local council ‘Staycation’ event leading up to the London 2012 Olympics sparked her interest. “No familial links to the sport – I just was interested. I tried it out and 13 years later, I have been selected to represent my country in the Junior International Series in Belfast this September, alongside my teammate, Jemma Tuohy.”
Her passion for the sport has only grown over the years. “You always strive to be the best you can be, so when you have had the experience of the Nationals, you always want to come back for more.”
For young and aspiring bowlers, Yaz offers this advice: “Just be yourself on and off the green and show everyone why you deserve to be recognised. At the Regional and National Finals, there will always be International Selectors watching, and you could make a lasting impression on them without even knowing.”
Yaz’s journey has been supported by many, and she is grateful to all who have been part of it. “I would like to thank my Managers – Debbie is our Juniors Manager, and it has been great to see how our Surrey Juniors section has evolved since I joined in 2017. We have a number of new talents coming through, and this is always great to see.” She also acknowledges Caroline Duarte, her Johns Trophy and Walker Cup Manager, for pushing the team to excel.
Yaz expresses deep appreciation for her friends and family. “I am also grateful to have some close friends who are so supportive and encouraging – I know some people my age who do not even tell their friends that they play bowls, but I have been fortunate to have friends that come to support me. Finally, my biggest support I have is my family – I dread to think the number of miles that have been covered since I started in 2011, but none of this could have happened without them!”
