Bowls’ Big Weekend Attendees


Bowls’ Big Weekend is back! Our national open weekend returns for 2022 on Friday 27 May to Sunday 29 May.

This is national initiative offering clubs the opportunity to promote our welcoming and socially-distanced sport and attract new members. We know that 20% of new bowlers join our sport on the back of open weekends, that our clubs want support to help recruit new players and that there are plenty of people out there who would love to have a go at bowls.

Last year over 21 million people saw bowls online & on TV across the country, with on average 26 attendees going to over 700 clubs. We want this year to be bigger and better, so…

  • We’re hosting a series of webinars (register by clicking here) and you can find these in the FAQ section below. We’ll explore topics such as marketing online, promotion in your local community, how to run a great event, and the ins & outs of GDPR. The link above also includes the chance to register to attend.
  • We’ve improved the sign-up process for attendees to get greater clarity on who and how many people are attending your club’s events.
  • We’ll be investing in a national media & PR campaign to get Bowls’ Big Weekend out there! Last year BBC Breakfast attended Colchester BC in Essex, whilst local news across the land headed out to lots of our clubs to showcase the sport.
  • We will be providing a resource pack for all clubs who register.
  • We are also offering a new digital platform for clubs to purchase extra posters, leaflets and more, as well as download free social media assets to use to shout about your event!

Bowls’ Big Weekend is open to clubs affiliated to Bowls England and British Crown Green Bowling Association, and is being run alongside the Bowls Development Alliance and Disability Bowls England.

When can my club sign up for Bowls’ Big Weekend?
Clubs can register their events now and gain exclusive access to the guidance support and marketing resources available by clicking here.
What marketing materials will be available and when will my club be able to access them?

When you register, you will receive our Club Guide, as well as information on available webinars we are running.

Ahead of the event, you will also receive a club resources pack, with flyers, posters, balloons and more. These will be sent out to the addresses provided on w/c 28th March.

We will also provide you with a digital platform where you can download social media graphics, poster & flyer templates, and also order more printed marketing material if required. This will be available to clubs from w/c 4th April.

Can we run more than one Bowls’ Big Weekend event?
Yes! Having multiple options for people over the course of the weekend is a great way to ensure as many people as possible have the opportunity to attend. It also allows you to plan these flexibly around your clubs diary.
We have an open day arranged but it’s not during these dates, can we still sign up?
Yes. Whilst we strongly encourage all our clubs to run an event over the weekend, as the majority of our marketing materials and digital advertising campaign will be aligned to Bowls’ Big Weekend, we do, however, want all of our affiliated clubs to be able benefit from the support available.
What do Bowls England need from clubs regarding data?

Importance of returning data

As you’ll see above, we’ll be hosting a GDPR session for clubs ahead of Bowls’ Big Weekend. A recording of this can be found here.

We wanted to briefly reiterate the importance of returning data to us after the event, why this is safe for you to do, and how we’re making it as easy as possible for you to do that.

The data we receive from clubs after the event helps us justify putting more money into this event and other activity to develop our sport moving forward. It allows us to advise UK Sport & Sport England of the demographics of attendees, which in turn can increase funding from these organisations into the sport. If people choose to opt-in to hear from Bowls England, we can also support clubs in selling membership & getting more players on the green.

All attendees who come to Bowls’ Big Weekend can be contacted by Bowls England under ‘legitimate interest’. They will be contacted once, asked to fill in a survey with their observations of the day and asked to opt-in. If they do not opt-in they will not be contacted by us again.

The declarations we will ask you to sign when registering your event protects your club from a legal standpoint, but also commits you will return data to us as part of the event.

How can you return the data?

We have set up a Google form for you to fill in, and this will automatically share the data with Bowls England when entered on the day. This will be mailed to your club in the week before the event.  We have created a user guide for you to use this register.  All you need is:

  • A laptop/tablet/mobile phone at the club on the day with internet access
  • A Google account (if you do not have one, they take 5 minutes to set up)

We also have created an Excel spreadsheet for you to use if you’d prefer. These must be returned typed up – if you fill them in by hand, someone at the club will need to type these up! Photos of handwritten sheets will not be accepted.  Simply save the document under your club name and send it back to clubs@bowlsengland.com
