SOPHIE TOLCHARD
Club: Kings BC
County: Devon
Birmingham 2022: Women’s Pairs Silver Medal
Previous Commonwealth Games: 2
Commonwealth Medals: 2
Sophie Tolchard will join her brother Sam aiming to bring home more Commonwealth success for their family, which has a high degree of sporting prowess.
Sophie recognises that her family’s long and successful involvement in the sport resulted in her spending a lot of time watching bowls matches.
Eventually, following the adage if you can’t beat them, join them, Sophie took up the game, in part inspired by her older brother Sam.
Like a number of her fellow squad members, the 30-year old plays for Kings BC, Torquay.
Based in Paignton, Sophie finds inspiration from her father, who passed away aged 50. He remains a significant motivation driving her to succeed in the upcoming Birmingham games.
Speaking recently about her father, Sophie said, “we’ve got really nice memories of him, and he’ll always have a special place in our heart when we’re competing at a high level. We want to do it for him.”
Sophie is a 2014 Commonwealth gold medallist and is a serial National Finals winner. Last year, she won her eighth national title in the Women’s Triples.
She combines the critical skills of experience and winning; essential attributes for podium success.
With this level of skill and success, we can all look forward to a meaningful medal haul and we are certainly hopingfor a repeat of 2014 at Leamington this summer.
