CLUB STORIES | Gildredge Park Charity Challenge

6th May, 2021

As part of our new Club Stories feature, we’ll be looking at stories from across the bowls community, including local news, club business and competition results. This week, we look at Gildredge Park Bowls Club’s effort in raising money for Dementia UK.

The past year has seen so many fantastic charity feats, and Gildredge Park Bowls Club can add their name to the list. On Saturday 1st May, they took on a mighty challenge – 100 bowls each over 25 ends! All donations were going to roller Roy Payton’s fundraising efforts for Dementia UK. It also formed part of the national Captain Tom 100 challenge.

Despite inclement weather, the club managed to hit their target. Organised by George Murray, the following numbers give an indication of how difficult the challenge was.

  • 2,250 Bowls
  • 18 Kilometres walked
  • 3.1 tonnes of weight moved
  • 91 hours played

As George commented, “It was a great achievement. Thanks to all who participated and to non playing members and friends who donated to Dementia UK. Donations at the event are approaching £500.”

In context, 3.1 tonnes is the equivalent size of two full grown hippos!
